Mangystau Region was founded in the south part of Guryev Region in 1973 and earlier was called Magyshlak Region. Its capital is Aktau, which has the status “Sea gates” of Kazakhstan. The region is including 2 cities, 5 districts.
It is situated to the east from Caspian Sea on the tableland Magyshlak and borders Atyrau and Aktobe Provinces in the north-east, Turkmenistan- in the south and Uzbekistan – in the east.
Mangystau Region is the center of oil production. And also it has great tourist potential. Fort Shevchenko, necropolis Shopan-Ata, underground temple Shakpak-Ata, underground mosque Sultan-Epe and many other historical and architecturalmonuments are worthy to be seen.
Necropolises Koshkar-Ata and Kalypan are the most ancient monuments in Mangystau. The most ancient monuments were built in 9 century. You can see evolution of architecture from simple stone walls to beautiful mausoleums.
