South Kazakhstan Region was founded in 1932 in the south of Kazakhstan, within eastern part of Turan lowland and western spurs of Tyan-Shan. The capital is Shymkent city. Administrative and territorial structure of the region is including 4 cities: Shymkent, Kentau, Turkestan, Arys; 11 rural districts.
South Kazakhstan Region is rich in polymetallic and iron ores, mineral and feed resources for producing construction materials.
South Kazakhstan Region also has a great potential for developing tourism in Kazakhstan. Situated at an intersection of important transport roads, the province is connected with Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Russia by main roads and railway lines.
Mausoleum Khodzha Akhmet Yassavy, burial-vault Domalak-Ana, medieval town Sauran, Arystan-Bab Mausoleum, Karashash-Ana-Ibragym-Ata Mausoleum, Otrar town and many other historical monuments are situated in South Kazakhstan Region.
